![]() Putting another 100lbs of unflexing inertia-laden steel in that waist is going to have a major effect. That's why it's easier to forge in the center of mass, above the waist, instead of out over the tail or on the horn where most of that cone is air. When you strike down, the cone directly under your hammer is going to determine how much resistance you get and how much that effort goes into the work. A good secure stand is part of it, but wood and even a welded steel stand is going to have flex and deaden your blow. The more mass you put directly under your blow, the more effective it will be. Wut? Anvil weight is everything or they wouldn't make them over 100lbs. If I could have afforded one of those two, I would have bought one. Top of the line would probably be Refflinghaus and Peddinghaus (Ridgid). l find I prefer the double bick pattern and I suggest you try to find a place where you can check that style out.I'd never go back to a London pattern by choice. Ductile iron is the bottom of the line as far as anvil making material goes but several manufacturers use it and I have found it to be satisfactory for hobby/semi professional use. They offer both London pattern and German double bick pattern and are cast from Ductile Iron. ![]() ![]() The best value I have found, and I ended up buying one, is a Texas Farrier Supply (TFS) anvil. anvil is going to cost anywhere from around $1100.00 to $2000.00. What is your price range? That will have something to do with what you buy. anvil new about 5 years ago and the shipping was close to $250.00. That said, freight on big anvils is terrible. You are on the right track, if the anvil does not need to be moved around alot.
